December 14th - SF - Chromatrope is proud to announce the launch of EARTHscope.com(ESCOM).

ESCOM represents the fruit of several months of collaboration between Chromatrope and the Buckminster Fuller Institute of Sebastopol, California.

click to view the LIVE site!

ESCOM showcases the EARTHscope (ES), a new tool for displaying the profound, yet often invisible trends affecting global and local communities. The ES project is an initiative of the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI), and an extension of Fuller's lifelong commitment to promoting world literacy about global problems, trends, and needs.

Chromatrope has helped BFI to develop the entire project, from interface design and programming to project strategy and promotions. We are now working with BFI to produce a series of ES geo-story presentations with prestigious content partners including AAAS, Green Map System and the Center for Native Lands.

ESCOM was produced in a rapid collaborative process with client and team members across the United States. We started with an initial content draft from BFI, which we placed into an Information Architecture showing where the content would best reside, and suggesting additional areas to complete the site. After approval, Jonathan edited BFI¹s text and drafted new copy as needed. Andy and Joe conducted a series of look and feel exercises with the client to reach the final design, which resulted in an html template and style sheet to assure visual consistency. The content was then laid into the site and the soft launch was complete. Next, we went into Quality Assurance mode, checking the site from a user¹s point of view and making final corrections. After ironing out the bugs, SECOM was ready to go, featuring an improved version of the EARTHscope engine.

"The site will function as the prime "go to" point for all things EARTHscope. Giving individuals, and institutions, the opportunity to fully explore the ideas and principles contained in the project... it is a great honor for our team to be invloved in work so closely related to the principles of the late R. Buckminster Fuller."

J. Skopek - Creative Director for Chromatrope

August 25th 2003 - Chromatrope completes a successful collaboration with BFI and Earthspan.

Chromatrope completed a successful collaboration with the Buckminster Fuller Institute and EARTHSPAN on a EARTHscope Kiosk project for the Assateague Island Peregrine Falcon Survey in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (CNWR).

Assateague Island, which runs along the coast of Maryland and Virginia, has long been recognized as a major concentration point for peregrine falcons migrating south to their wintering grounds. The Touch Screen Kiosk will reside in the visitors center opening in early October 2003, it is expected to recieve over 1 million screen views in the coming year!

Earthspan, based in Baltimore, Maryland, uses and creates advanced technologies to conserve biodiversity, ecosystems and environmental health.

"Our role in the project was to develop a kiosk based simplification of the EARTHscope interface to display time series animations of Peregrine Falcon flight paths" said Doug Roussin, chromatrope's Senior Flash Engineer. "We needed to create a solution that would be capable of displaying the data animated in near real time."

"Earthspan is very appreciative of the efforts of BFI/Chromatrope in helping us to develop a kiosk application for the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (CNWR). This kiosk is being installed in the CNWR¹s new visitor center, called the Bateman Educational Center. This facility will host over 1.7 million visitors annually. We could not have completed the kiosk in a such professional manner without the timely and expert assistance of BFI/Chromatrope. EARTHscope delivers an attractive presentation that will soon become "THE" kiosk display in the Bateman Center, and they did so in a very timely manner at low cost. BFI/Chromatrope provided Earthspan with expertise that we cannot afford to keep in house as a small not-for profit. The EARTHScope kiosk will enable the million or so annual refuge visitors to experience bird migration like never before!"

Blake Henke - Director / Earthspan

Summer Conference Re-Cap

ESRI International User Conference - July 7-9, San Diego, California
Chromatrope attended and presented at the 23nd Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, during which more than 12,000 GIS professionals come together. The presentation to K-12 educators was focused on making the invisible visible through the use of geo-stories and GIS.

What's GIS? Geographic Information Systems combine layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place. What layers of information you combine depends on your purpose–finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing similar crimes in a city to detect a pattern, and so on.
What do you need to use GIS? A full GIS, or geographic information system, requires: Hardware (computers and peripherals), Software, Data, People,Training and sound analysis methods for interpreting the results generated by the GIS.
>> Read on for more detailed information.

OTHER NEWS:

Chromatrope will also be continuing our exciting work with the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) on the EARTHscope initiative of spaceshipEARTH. The EARTHscope is a new computer based tool that displays interactive and animated geo stories about the state of the Earth and our possible futures.

We recently reached a major milestone with an interactive Beta EARTHscope Library demo of the EARTHscope's interface and capabilities. Within days of its completion, the demo has already received rave reviews from global sustainability leaders such as United Nations Environment Programme, Center for Support of Native Lands and Conservation International.

With this overwhelmingly positive response, we are now ready to launch a series of pilot presentations, showcasing projects and data from a select group of environmental and educational institutions. These pilots will become part of a larger "EARTHscope Library" of the life support systems of the planet. Providing a comprehensive "Big Picture" view of the planetary situation.
In February the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington D.C. launched the "Atlas of Population and Environment - powered by EARTHscope". The atlas details the relationship between population and the environment through a series of map based displays. You can view it now at: Atlas of Population and Environment

What is a chromatrope anyway?

Some thoughts on design :

Design, usually considered in the context of the applied arts, engineering, architecture, and other such creative endeavours, is used as both a noun and a verb. "Design" as a verb refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a new object (machine, building, product, etc.). As a noun, "design" is used both for the final plan or proposal (a drawing, model, or other description), or the result of implementing that plan or proposal (the object produced).

Designing normally requires considering aesthetic, functional, and many other aspects of an object, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, iterative adjustment, and re-design.

Design as a process can take many forms depending on the object being designed and the individual or individuals participating.

In philosophy, the abstract noun "design" refers to pattern, or to purpose/purposefulness (or teleology). Design is thus contrasted with purposelessness, randomness, or lack of complexity.
