About the director

About the director, Estée Blancher.

Film Katrina is a film by Estée Blancher, a film student at CSU Monterey Bay who was granted an independent study to return to her home state of Louisiana to document the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This documentary explores the themes of loss and devastation, transformation and hope, and the power of faith in trying times. The film shows the effects of catastrophe on everyday people. People who are overwhelmed with hardship, despair, and continued resistance still make efforts to return home and rebuild their lives.

Told in lucid voices and stunning images, Film Katrina emphasizes the rich and unique culture and landscape of the Gulf region -- what has been lost, what has been saved, and what the future will bring. It is also about nature, media, and government, and the roles they create and play in our lives -- all told in powerful, authentic voices of local residents.

Film Katrina travels to places so obscure that they are not even on the Red Cross relief map. Estée brings more then just supplies, she brings understanding, hope, and a voice to those who feel abandoned, betrayed, and forgotten by their own country.

Efforts are still being made to raise funds for post-production, promotion, distribution, and future visits to the Gulf Coast to keep the story alive.
